The Organized Village of Kasaan’s Brownfields Program was established to identify and clean up possibly contaminated sites in the Kasaan Bay Watershed. Currently there have been 35 areas of concern that have been identified. The sites consist of abandoned mines and prospects. There are two sites that are being actively monitored which include the Salt Chuck Mine and the Ross-Adams Mine. The Salt Chuck Mine was a palladium mine that ran from 1909 to 1947. Due to contamination of subsistence resources this site has been proposed for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund list. The Ross-Adams Mine, a former uranium mine, was in operation from 1955 to 1971. The Ross-Adams Mine is being cleaned up by the Newmont Mining Company as they were found to be the last remaining company to have actively mined at the site that is still in operation.
